Science Sleuths at HVA
Forensic Science students are studying fingerprint analysis this week. They prepared fingerprint sheets and classified their fingerprints. They also examined a mock crime scene for fingerprints, applying dusting and fuming techniques, and using a videoscope to enlarge the prints.
I teach Environmental Science, Chemistry, ChemCom, Forensic Science, Art Appreciation, and Painting at Highland View Academy. I also write grants for the school. I have an undergraduate degree in chemistry and masters degrees in chemistry and teaching.
I love science and nature, and one of my passions is science education. I try to provide as many hands-on experiences for my students as I possibly can.
Toyota Motors Foundation gave us a Toyota Tapestry large grant of $10,000.00 to study about mushrooms and how they affect forest ecosystems and our lives. Check out or project website at http://sites.google.com/site/hvamycology/home to see some of the exciting things we are doing in our classroom and outdoors.
MODEL of EXCELLENCE
The Environmental Science program at HVA has been cited as a "model of excellence" by the Chesapeake Bay Trust, the foundation that funds our field trips and restoration projects. Chesapeake Bay conservation issues are incorporated with many core topics in our Environmental Science curriculum.
