Owl Pellet Dissection
Environmental Science students dissected owl pellets in their study of food chains, food webs, and trophic levels. They determined the owl's diet from the bones in their pellet. They also identified and sorted the bones from their pellets.
I teach Environmental Science, Chemistry, ChemCom, Forensic Science, Art Appreciation, and Painting at Highland View Academy. I also write grants for the school. I have an undergraduate degree in chemistry and masters degrees in chemistry and teaching.
I love science and nature, and one of my passions is science education. I try to provide as many hands-on experiences for my students as I possibly can.
Toyota Motors Foundation gave us a Toyota Tapestry large grant of $10,000.00 to study about mushrooms and how they affect forest ecosystems and our lives. Check out or project website at http://sites.google.com/site/hvamycology/home to see some of the exciting things we are doing in our classroom and outdoors.
MODEL of EXCELLENCE
The Environmental Science program at HVA has been cited as a "model of excellence" by the Chesapeake Bay Trust, the foundation that funds our field trips and restoration projects. Chesapeake Bay conservation issues are incorporated with many core topics in our Environmental Science curriculum. Check out what the Chesapeake Bay Trust says about HVA's environmental science curriculum at http://www.cbtrust.org/site/c.miJPKXPCJnH/b.5587537/k.9414/Model_Projects.htm
